Greetings, dear friends!
The Metatrader 4 trading terminal has a tendency to update its build (version) unnoticed by the user. Moreover, new builds of MT4 rarely bring anything good: mostly they consist of bugs, and additionally, your old indicators and advisors may “suddenly” stop working.
There is a way to prevent the MT4 terminal from updating. It should be noted that previously there were more of these methods, but MetaQuotes is actively fighting this.
Attention: Use with caution as brokers can stop supporting version MT4 and you will forced to update to newest build sooner or later. In that case you wont be able to manage your trades using the terminal until you upgrade to newest build.
How does the auto-update process work
One day the MT4 terminal will start downloading something and at some point it may update. This may happen automatically or after you restart it.
To check which version of the terminal is currently installed, you need to open the MT4 trading terminal and select Help – About… from the main menu.
In the opened window, you will be able to identify the version of the trading terminal and the release date.
If you have several MT4 trading terminals on your computer and auto-update has started on one of them, then the next time you start them all will be updated. After updating the terminal, some expert advisors and indicators may stop working or start working with bugs.
How to disable MT4 update – Method 1
To do this, you need to follow these steps step by step:
C:\Users\”Username”\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotesYou can get into it by selecting “File – Open Data Folder” in the main menu of the MT4 terminal and go up several levels.
2. Delete the entire WebInstall folder with all its contents.
3. Insert the file provided for downloading with the name WebInstall. In this case, you need to enable the display of file extensions in Explorer.
If the MT4 terminal has already been updated, then you need to replace the terminal launch file “terminal.exe” in the root folder with the one to which the version you want to restore the release to.
Now the terminal (if all terminals installed under user data on the PC are indicated) will not be automatically updated. You remain unchanged with the build that was in place at the time of these actions.
Attention: The AppData folder may be hidden; to see it, you need to click View in Explorer and check the box next to Hidden items.
How to disable MT4 update – Method 2
Locate Your MT4 Installation Folder: The MT4 path should look like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\XXXX MT4 Client Terminal. If you’re unsure about the location, use the Task Manager to find it. Open Task Manager, locate the MT4 process, right-click and select ‘Properties’ to find the path.
Now Close your MT4.
(Optional) Create a Backup: Before proceeding with any modification, creating a backup of any files that will be replaced is good practice. In this case, locate the existing terminal.exe and metaeditor.exe in your MT4 installation folder. Copy them to somewhere else. This ensures that the original file remains safe if you need to revert to it later.
Copy the New Files: Now, copy the terminal.exe and metaeditor.exe in the downloaded file to the MT4 Installation folder.
Now, to stop MT4 auto-updating to the new build again.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and make a copy of the “hosts” file somewhere else as a backup, then run the “Disable auto-update MT4 MT5″(run it as administrator).
(If “Disable auto update MT4 MT5” causes any issue, you can revert it by copying back the backup hosts file you created back to “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc”)
Attention: If, after these steps, the Meta Trader terminal is still updated, then most likely this is because the update files have already been downloaded. You need to remove them.
They are located in appdata/roaming/metaquotes/webinstall.
Trading terminal launch file
In order to return the terminal version, you need to copy the “terminal.exe” file to the folder with the MT4 trading terminal launch file. Here we will post all current versions that are relevant for return (1400).
Conclusion
In conclusion, I would like to note. That returning to the previous version of the Meta Trader 4 trading terminal is a temporary measure. Ultimately, the broker will simply stop supporting it and you will be forced to update the Meta Trader trading terminal.
